About the event
Firesteps, Duckboards and Sandbags - First World War Trench Tours at Great War Huts Soon after the 2021 Heritage Open Days event the team at Great War Huts started building a reconstruction of a 1916 Trench System. Visitors can now walk through the most accurate reconstructed trenches in this country! The trenches have been built using the original 1916 trench building manuals as reference so the size, depth and materials are all accurate for the trenches built in France 106 year ago. There are dugouts, latrines, observation points, firesteps and a Regimental Aid Post.
The team have made the duckboards which line the bottom of the trenches with slats made from the floorboards of original huts that we have dismantled, so you even walk on First World War timber. The Company Headquarters and Signallers Dugouts are also made from sections of hut built during the war. It really does not get much more authentic.
The Brook Farm Camp site is still a work in progress so there is some rough ground to cover in order to reach the trenches so we would encourage visitors to wear appropriate footwear - especially if the weather is wet.
