Great War Huts, Brook Farm Camp, Bell's Ln, Bury St Edmunds, IP29 5NW, UK
About the event
Just up the road from Great War Huts, in Hawstead Churchyard, is the grave of Squadron Leader Brian Goodale, DFC. He was a member of 617 Squadron - ‘The Dambusters’.
That connection with the Dams Raid, in May 1943, seemed to be a very good reason to host a Hutted Histories talk about it, and who better to ask than Dave Taylor, a former colleague of Great War Huts founder Kev at Chivers Hartley at Histon, near Cambridge.
Dave has had a lifelong fascination with the raids, the Avro Lancaster and the men who took part. Over many years he has visited and interviewed quite a few of the men who took part in Operation Chastise.
He will talk about the background to the raid and the remarkable work that went in to enabling the Lancaster bomber crews to have a chance of hitting their targets in the dark and destroying them.
The Dams Raids were among the most extraordinary of the entire Second World War, even if the effects of the operation were relatively short-lived.
About Dave Taylor
Dave lives in Cambridge. He worked as a Production Supervisor at Chivers Hartley at Histon. He is now enjoying his retirement and still spends some of his time talking about The Dambusters!
