About the event

Historian and author Andrew Thornton talks about his research on the men of the British Expeditionary Force in 1914, the 'Old Contemptibles', who were they, and the history behind the Old Contemptibles Association. 

Andrew is a researcher and author. He studied BA (Hons) History and War Studies at the University of Wolverhampton and, many years later, for an MPhil at the University of Birmingham, which was awarded for his thesis on The Territorial Force in Staffordshire from 1908 to 1915. Andrew was also appointed an Honorary Research Fellow of the Centre for First World War Studies at the University of Birmingham. He has a long-standing interest in the British Expeditionary Force in 1914 and is currently researching The Old Contemptibles' Association and its membership - the Chums.
