About the event

“Now You’ve Got the Khaki On” - Getting to grips with Great War Soldier’s kit

This hands-on study day offers an in-depth exploration of the uniforms and equipment carried by British and Commonwealth soldiers of the Great War. Moving beyond photographs and written sources, participants will examine original and replica items to understand how uniform, equipment, weapons, and items of personal kit were designed, issued, and used on campaign.

Through guided discussion and practical demonstrations by some of the most knowledgable historians of the subject, attendees will learn how a soldier’s kit was assembled, why each item mattered, and how equipment evolved in response to the demands of modern industrial warfare. Participants will have the opportunity to handle individual items of uniform, equipment and weaponry, assemble a full set of equipment, and try it on, gaining a tangible appreciation of the weight, fit, and practical challenges faced by men at the front.

Ideal for historians, educators, students, living historians and anyone with an interest in the lived experience of the First World War, this immersive study day brings the material culture of the conflict vividly to life.

Taff Gillingham and Kev Smith have an exceptional level of knowledge of the uniforms, equipment, weapons and drills of the First World War. That knowledge has been put to good use for well over 40 years and has seen them gain a reputation for being at the very top of the film, television and theatre industry. Since founding Great War Huts, that knowledge is now being passed on for future generations.

Tea, coffee and lunch is included in the ticket price. Please make us aware of any dietary requirements when you purchase your ticket.
