About the event

Creative Conflict is a special exhibition at Great War Huts just for Heritage Open Days, featuring some wonderfully creative artefacts from the Great War Huts collection stretching from the South African War in 1899 to the Falklands War in 1982.

Amidst the death and destruction of warfare, soldiers have always found the time and the means to be creative. This creativity in conflict is probably as old as the history of warfare itself and will, no doubt, continue all the while that wars are being fought.  This exhibition features items predominantly from the First World War, as you would expect at Great War Huts, but we also feature some items from earlier, and later, conflicts.  This is a rare chance to see objects which have been drawn, painted, engraved, embroidered, whittled, carved and written. The creators of these include soldiers, nurses, prisoners of war, and even manufacturers who spotted a commercial opportunity!  Over a century later, these often beautiful survivors remind us that there is much more to conflict and war than fighting.

The exhibition is open daily between Saturday 9th September - Sunday 17th September. Site tours of Great War Huts and the trenches are held on specific days and must be booked in advance!
